Mioty

Mioty is a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) protocol developed by the Fraunhofer Institute.
What makes Mioty technology unique? The Mioty protocol implements Telegram Splitting Multiple Access (TSMA) to be more resilient against interferences. Mioty frequences are in the license free spectrum, e.g. EU868 or US915.
Mioty LPWAN is comparable to LoRaWAN. Both enable Internet of Things (IoT) applications and use the same frequency bands. The difference is in the underlying protocol: Mioty uses TSMA and LoRaWAN uses CSS.
As the Mioty protocol is patented software, royalty fees apply, which are managed by Sisvel International.

Benefits of Mioty

The Mioty is one of the latest LPWAN technologies and and overcomes some limitations of the existing networks. The main benefits are:

Robust
Robust against interferer thanks to the TSMA technology. This is especially important as more and more IoT devices fill the licence free frequences.

Energy efficient
Mioty is very energy efficient and enables to develop and produce small battery powered IoT end-devices.

Large number of end-devices
Mioty allows a large number of end-devices in the same frequency band.

Mioty Range

The Mioty range is about 20km line of sight. In cities between buildings this translates to a smaller range, but still much higher than Bluetooth or WiFi.

The robustness to interferer is a key benefit of the Mioty technology. Together with the short message time in the license free frequency bands makes Mioty a perfect choice for IoT applications in urban locations and difficult-to-reach applications.

Mioty vs. Lora

Mioty and LoRa are both LPWAN technologies in the same license free frequency bands and are both suited for IoT applications, because of their superior range to Bluetooth and WiFi.

LoRa uses chirp spread spectrum (CSS) to spread the data over time and to make it possible to receive even below the noise level. Mioty uses telegram splitting multiple access (TSMA) to spread the data over time and to make it possible to reconstruct even in presence of interferer.

Mioty vs LoRa is a decision one has to take upon his own application requirements and environment. It can be useful to test a sensors with fitted with a Mioty module and others with a LoRaWAN module.

Mioty Module

A Mioty module provides the Mioty technology, hardware and software, on a single small PCB. It offers enough resources and computational power to implement typical IoT applications. It easily interfaces all kinds of sensors and enables rapid prototyping or proof of concept.

Miromico's Mioty module can easily be replaced by other radio modules as they have the same footprint.
A LoRaWAN module is a generic full proven LoRaWAN end device controller which can be customized for specific sensors and application. It enables a rapid implementation of an IoT device.

Mioty Applications

Mioty is often chosen for urban IoT applications or when energy efficient sensors are needed. Mioty is resilient to interferences and offers a large number a devices active at the same time.

Smart City

For Smart City applications Mioty is the perfect choice thanks to the long range, resilience to interferences and energy efficient implementation.

Smart Metering

The Mioty LPWAN solution perfectly fits the Smart Metering use case in cities and urban areas, thanks to its robustness and low power consumption in end-devices (meters). There's no need to access the internal WiFi infrastructure.

Industry 4.0

In manufacturing halls the problem often are interferences and that's where Mioty comes in with its telegram splitting multiple access technology. For low bandwith application this is a good choice for a radio technology.
