LoRaWAN Gateway

A LoRaWAN® gateway receives LoRaWAN packets and sends them to the internet and receives packets from the internet and sends them back to the LoRaWAN network. The connection to the internet can be done over the mobile cellular network or over a local router connected over Ethernet or WiFi.

LoRaWAN gateways are produced by many different companies. They are often based on the reference design from Semtech and use an off-the-shelf mobile data card. IoT LoRaWAN gateways are typically available for different LoRaWAN frequency bands like EU 868 MHz and US 915. Usually a LoRaWAN gateway has a web interface for configuration.

LoRaWAN Gateway Outdoor

A LoRaWAN outdoor gateway has the same functionality as an indoor gateway, but is packed in a water proof enclosure with extra water proof connectors and antennas. Outdoor gateway are used for outdoor applications in smart farming, agriculture, smart cities. Often they are mounted on poles where they can be seen from far.

LoRaWAN Gateway Range

The range of a LoRaWAN gateway depends on the output power of the gateway, the antenna gain and the location of the gateway. Often they are placed on poles and on top of buildings. The range can reach 100km with line of sight. In cities between buildings this translates to a smaller range, but still much higher than WiFi or Bluetooth. Even LoRaWAN satellites are deployed more and more in order to get global coverage. The coverage in cities and in buildings can be increased by placing more gateways.

If a LoRaWAN packet is captured and transmitted to the internet by more than one gateway, the LoRa Network Server LNS filters out the duplicate packets. The LNS also routes the packets from the internet to the LoRaWAN devices by choosing the Gateway with the highest received signal strength (RSSI).

LoRaWAN Gateway Applications

Smart Metering

For Smart Metering you typically install one indoor gateway per building to capture the signal from all LoRaWAN sensors. For large buildings you add more gateways.

Asset Tracking

In Asset Tracking, LoRaWAN gateways are often installed in warehouses, airports, terminal, trans-shippment points where goods are passing through.

Smart Agriculture

In Smart Agriculture typically outdoor LoRaWAN gateways are used, because they are installed outside in the field and can resist to harsh weather conditions.
