LoRaWAN Sensor

A LoRaWAN sensor is an electronic device that basically consists of a sensor combined with a LoRaWAN module. They are typically battery powered devices used in Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN).

They are mounted on vehicles, containers and other moving objects or carried by people or animals. LoRaWAN sensors are also used in remote locations or places which are difficult to reach.

IoT sensors are often produced in large volumes for instance for Smart Agriculture, Smart Buildings, Smart Cities, and Industry 4.0 applications.

Benefits of LoRaWAN Sensors

LoRaWAN sensors enable a company to get data from remote places in real time and to act on them. This way a company can accelerate processes, save costs and in the end be more efficient. The main benefits of LoRaWAN sensors are:

Energy efficient
Most of the time the sensor is in a sleep mode and only wakes up for a measurement and a transmission over LoraWAN.

Long range
LoRaWAN sensors can send data over 100km (line of sight) in the free field. In cities between buildings the range of LoRaWAN sensors translates to a higher range than WiFi or BLE thanks to the LoRa modulation which is more immune to interferences.

Low cost
LoRaWAN sensors are simple devices, which can be produced in large volumes.

Smart Metering

Technical staff used to drive regularly to each building in order to read the meter values. With Smart Metering this is done over radio communication, like e.g. LoRaWAN.

Smart Building

In Smart Buildings small battery powered devices like sensors, actuators, buttons and others need to communicate to the internet. LoRaWAN is an appropriate technology, because it's low-power and proven over years.

Smart Agriculture

Animal tracking and smart irrigation are important applications in Smart Agriculture. That's where LoRaWAN sensors are a good choice because of their low power consumption and long range.

LoRaWAN IoT Devices

IoT sensors are provided with different radio technology like WiFi, Bluetooth, NBIoT, Mioty, LoRaWAN. The LoRaWAN® technology used for low power IoT devices with a low data throughput.

Thanks to the same foot-print, the Miromico IoT modules allow to produce the same IoT device with different radio technologies.
Miromico offers a list of standard configurable IoT devices.
